You have likely heard the alarming reports that have surfaced in recent weeks of hospitals across the country experiencing a severe shortage of cancer drugs, including some critical to successfully treating children with cancer. Many hospitals and clinicians have reported shortages of preservative-free methotrexate, a drug that is essential to the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and osteosarcoma.
On February 21, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that a complete shortage of methotrexate has been averted due to a series of actions taken by the Agency, industry and other stakeholders.
While children with cancer and advocates won a battle this week – the drug shortage crisis continues, and immediate action is needed to prevent future shortages. The activities highlighted at the recent FDA briefing provide a short-term fix, but legislative action is needed to resolve the complex factors causing shortages and to prevent future crises.
